Resources for the Asian & Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ Community for supporting the Black LGBTQ+ Community

author’s note (Updated 07/10/2020):

In order to dismantle the systems of white supremacy, heteronormativity, and the gender binary that dominate and allow for anti-Blackness to continue, we—as the API LGBTQ+ community—need to do the work of dismantling anti-Blackness and being in active solidarity with Black communities. This work will take place in our communities, in our organizations, in our homes, and in our hearts. And, we must directly support Black leaders and organizations who are doing the work.

We hope that this document will help you and others within the API LGBTQ+ umbrella:

  • Understand the centrality of abolition for Black liberation and imagine a police-free future safer for marginalized communities

  • Center and support Black LGBTQ+ voices and organizations

  • Initiate difficult conversations with family/peers

  • Activate in the Greater Los Angeles area in support of Black Lives through direct action

Please let us know if you believe any of these resources are counterproductive or can offer additional resources that provide greater insight into the positionality of the API LGBTQ+ community in the movement. The work of dismantling white supremacy requires an ongoing, lifelong commitment to challenging deeply internalized systems and structures. We should expect to fail while doing the work, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop doing it.
