Victory! Anti-Trans Youth Referendum Fails!
An effort to repeal the School Success and Opportunity Act which protects the rights of transgender students failed to collect enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot. The new law, also known as Assembly Bill 1266, requires that trans students be permitted to participate in athletic teams and use facilities consistent with the gender in which they identify. This state-wide law follows policies already in practice by the Los Angeles Unified School district and other jurisdictions.
Jackson Darling, Program Manager for the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center’s Vote for Equality will discuss the provisions of AB 1266, why it came under attack, and what to expect from opponents of equality in the future.
ALSO – A Chinese-Vietnamese queer refugee shares the challenges of starting a family of her own. Casey Huynh will show her short autobiographical film on the struggles of being a lesbian single mother.
As we will be serving a light dinner, RSVP is required. Please RSVP to Tran Le at firstname.lastname@example.org.
